Free AI social media tools, and exactly where the limit sits

Free tiers here are real, not bait. The catch is that they are cut along a line you cannot see until you cross it, usually in week three.

Free tiers in this category are not a trick. They are usually a genuine slice of the product, offered because the company would rather you form a habit than bounce off a paywall. The catch is that the slice is cut along a line you cannot see from the pricing page, and you tend to find it in week three, once you have built a routine around the tool.

This is what actually runs out, roughly in the order you meet it, and the point where paying stops being a tax and starts being a decision.

The five limits, in the order you hit them

LimitWhat it looks like in practiceWhen it bites
Connected channelsBuffer free: three. Metricool free: one brand, no LinkedIn or XThe day you add a fourth, often Pinterest or Google Business
Scheduled postsBuffer free: ten per channel in the queue at once. Metricool free: twenty a monthWeek three, if you post twice a week
AI generationsCounted separately from postsThe first time you rewrite one caption three times
UsersOne, nearly everywhereThe moment someone else has to approve
Analytics historySeven to thirty days depending on the toolThe first time you ask whether any of this is working

Channels

The most common cap and the least negotiable. One to three channels covers a business that has picked its battles. It stops covering you the moment someone points out you should be on Google Business, which for a local business is usually the channel with the shortest path to a customer.

Scheduled posts

This limit comes in two shapes and they behave nothing alike, which is why so much writing about free tiers gets it wrong. Buffer's free plan gives you ten posts per channel, and its help centre is explicit that this is a queue size rather than a quota: not a daily, weekly, or monthly limit, but the number of posts you can store in each channel's queue at any one time. Publish one and the slot comes back. At one post a day you are simply never more than ten days scheduled ahead, forever, for nothing.

Metricool's free plan is the other shape: twenty posts a month, and when they are gone they are gone until the month turns over. Twenty a month is five a week, which is more than most small businesses manage, so the ceiling that actually stops you there is the one brand limit rather than the post count. Whether five a week is even the right target is a separate question, answered in how often a small business should post.

AI generations

Counted separately from posts, and this is the one that surprises people. Generating a caption, disliking it, and regenerating twice is three generations for one post. On a tier with twenty generations a month you have spent a seventh of the allowance on a single caption you have not published yet.

Users

Almost always one. If the person writing the posts is not the person who decides what goes out, the free plan does not fit your business no matter how generous the rest of it looks.

Analytics history

The quiet one, and the range is wide: a week at the stingy end, thirty days on Metricool's free plan. Either is enough to see whether a post did well, and neither is enough to see whether anything is working. Those are different questions and only the second one changes what you do next.

What free is genuinely good for

Finding out whether you will actually use it. Most social media tools are abandoned inside a month and it is rarely the tool's fault. If a free plan sits untouched for a fortnight, paying will not change that, and the honest read is that the problem is time or appetite rather than software.

Two simple event posts, a latte art throwdown and a cocktail bar's joke about its own name

It is also genuinely enough for one channel done properly. A business posting to Instagram twice a week, writing its own captions, can sit on a free plan for a long time without meeting anything. If that is you, stop reading and keep your money.

What free is not good for

  • Anything with a second person involved. The user cap ends it before the features do.
  • Deciding what to post. Free AI allowances are sized for polishing, not producing.
  • Knowing whether it worked. A week to a month of history cannot show a trend.
  • More than about three channels, which is most businesses once you count Google Business.

A note on free AI writing

The free tiers of ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini will write captions all day at no cost, and for many businesses that is the cheaper half of the problem solved. If content is your bottleneck rather than consistency, start there before paying for a tool whose AI is a thin layer over the same models. The prompts worth saving are in 18 ChatGPT prompts for social media.

What you do not get for free is the calendar, the publishing, or anything that remembers to post while you are with a customer.

When paying starts to make sense

The honest trigger is not a feature. It is the week you skipped. When you notice you have not posted since the fourteenth and cannot remember deciding not to, the thing you are short of is not scheduling slots.

At that point the comparison worth making is not free against paid software. It is software against the alternative, which is an agency retainer or a part time hire, and that is a different order of number entirely. We put the figures side by side in what social media management actually costs, and the sceptical case is in is AI social media worth it for a small business. A fair share of the people who reach this article are on the other side of that invoice, living on a free tier because they are billing a client for the work, and the number that decides it for them is how much to charge for social media management.

Two posts about price, one about raising it and one asking how much you can invest each month

If you would rather see which tools do which job before any of this, that is the ten AI social media tools worth knowing. And if the phrase itself is doing too much work for you, what an AI social media manager actually is is the piece that separates a caption button from a system that runs a month, which is most of what the free tiers here are arguing about.

Frequently asked questions

Is there a completely free AI social media tool?

There are free tiers, and they are genuinely usable rather than demos. A tool that is free with no limits and no paid plan behind it is rare, and worth asking how it is funded before you connect your accounts to it. Most free plans cap channels, scheduled posts and AI generations separately, so you can be well inside two limits and blocked by the third.

Which limit do small businesses hit first?

Channels, then AI generations. Scheduled post caps tend to bite later than people expect, because most businesses post less often than they planned to. The generation cap surprises people because regenerating a caption you did not like counts every time, so one published post can cost three or four generations.

Can I just use ChatGPT for free instead of paying for a tool?

For writing captions, yes, and for a lot of businesses that solves the cheaper half of the problem. What you do not get is the calendar, the publishing, or anything that acts when you are busy. If your problem is blank pages, go direct to a model. If your problem is silent weeks, that is not something a writing tool fixes.

Do free plans put a watermark on posts?

Scheduling tools generally do not, because they publish your content rather than making it. Design and video tools are where watermarks live, and the terms differ on whether free output can be used commercially. Check that specifically if you are a business rather than a personal account, since it is the one limit that follows you after you leave the tool.

Is a free social media scheduler enough for a small business?

For one or two channels, written by one person, posting a couple of times a week, usually yes for months. It stops being enough when a second person needs to approve, when you add a third or fourth channel, or when you want to know whether any of it changed anything.

How we researched this

  • Every allowance quoted here was read off the vendor's own pricing or help pages on 3 August 2026, not copied from another comparison article. Where a number comes from a specific page, that page is linked in the sentence that uses it.
  • We only name a limit when the vendor states it themselves. Several tools describe their free tier in marketing language that does not survive contact with the help centre, and in those cases the help centre wins.
  • Free tiers are repackaged often. Anything here could be out of date the week after we checked it, which is why each figure carries the name of the tool it belongs to rather than being averaged into a single number for the category.
  • We sell a paid product in this category and no free tier of our own that competes with these. That shapes what we find interesting about the question, and it is disclosed below.
