The short answer
Resize to 1080 pixels wide. Instagram does not display a feed image any wider, so a bigger file is only shrunk and recompressed on upload. For the height, 1440 gives a 3:4 portrait, the tallest feed post Instagram keeps and the same shape as the profile grid. 1350 gives 4:5, which is fine in the feed but loses a sliver off each side in the grid.
If your photo is a different shape, you have two honest choices. Crop keeps the post full bleed and throws away the overhang, and you choose which part survives. Fit keeps the whole photo and fills the leftover band with a blurred copy of itself or a flat colour. That second one is how you post a landscape photo to Instagram without losing anyone off the edges.

How to resize an image for Instagram

Choose a file, drag it onto the box or paste a screenshot. It is read by your browser and never uploaded, so a client's unreleased artwork is as safe here as on your desktop.

Pick the Instagram size
Each size is one Instagram actually displays, with a line on what it is for. The preview redraws at the real pixel size as you switch, and says how much a crop would cut.

Crop or fit, then download
Crop fills the frame and you drag to choose what stays. Fit keeps the whole picture and fills the gap with a blurred copy or a colour. Download a JPG or a PNG at exactly the size you picked.
Crop or fit: the one choice that matters
A picture that is a different shape from the frame has to give something up. Crop gives up edges: the image is scaled until it covers the frame and the overhang is cut, which keeps the post full bleed. It is right for photographs with room around the subject. Drag the preview and you choose which edge goes.
Fit gives up nothing from the picture and spends the frame instead: the whole image sits inside it and the leftover band is filled. It is right for anything with words near the edge, such as a designed post, a screenshot or a slide, where a crop would take letters with it. A blurred copy of the image makes the band look intentional; a flat colour from your brand makes it look designed.

What size should I resize a photo to for Instagram?
1080 x 1440 for a portrait post, which is 3:4 and the tallest Instagram keeps. 1080 x 1350 (4:5) is the older default and still works. 1080 x 1080 for square, 1080 x 1920 for stories and reels. The width is always 1080, because Instagram does not show a feed image any wider.
How do I post a whole photo on Instagram without cropping it?
Choose Fit. The whole photo is scaled to sit inside the frame and the empty band is filled with a blurred copy of the photo, or with white, black or a colour you pick. The result is a normal 1080 wide post that Instagram has nothing left to crop.
Why does my 4:5 post look cut off on my profile?
Because the profile grid has been 3:4 since January 2025. A 4:5 image is slightly wider than a 3:4 tile, so the grid trims about 3% off each side. A square loses 12.5% off each side. Resize to 3:4 and the grid shows the whole post.
Does resizing make the photo lower quality?
Only if the photo is smaller than the size you ask for, and then the tool says so under the preview. Scaling a large photo down to 1080 wide is exactly what Instagram would do on upload anyway. Doing it yourself means you choose the crop and the compression instead of the app.
JPG or PNG?
JPG for photographs, which is what Instagram converts everything to. PNG only helps for flat graphics with sharp text, and even then Instagram recompresses it, so the benefit is small.
Is my photo uploaded anywhere?
No. The file is read and redrawn by your own browser, and the download is made on your device. There is no account, no watermark and nothing sent to a server.
